Cornerstone

Cornerstone, a ministry of The Episcopal Church Foundation, is committed to strengthening the personal and professional lives of those called to lead Episcopal congregations.

Cornerstone began in 1987 as the result of a challenge from then Presiding Bishop Edmund Browning to seek new ways of promoting leadership development within the Church by strengthening the personal and professional lives of clergy.

Through a collaborative effort with The Alban Institute and The Grubb Institute, a study of the personal and professional development of the leadership of the Episcopal Church was conducted. The resulting report entitled Excellence in Ministry eventually led to the development of several programs and published research documents.

During the early 1990s, Cornerstone focused on the issues of health, wholeness, and holiness in the lives of clergy. Programs were developed dealing with spirituality, vocational discernment, and collegiality and were introduced to dioceses throughout the country. These programs and publications continue to be widely used throughout the Church. Research initiatives developed during this period included Theology of Priesthood, Involuntary Termination (published), Wellness Study (published), Spirituality Consultation (published), and a Study of the Episcopacy.

Beginning in 1995, the Projectís ministry examined what health, wholeness and holiness means for Episcopal congregations, with particular emphasis on congregational leadership. This work included a look at clergy/vestry relationships. A result of that research was the development and distribution of Vestry Papers, a newsletter published five times each year and designed expressly to help vestries look at distinctive leadership issues and their lives together as the elected lay leadership in their congregations, and Vestry Resource Guide, a new kind of Vestry guide providing information on such topics as the role of the Vestry, its relationship to the rector and the congregation, sample job descriptions, and stewardship information. Development of a second volume is in development, and a Spanish translation of Volume I will also soon be available . The second volume will cover the topics of financial leadership, spiritual leadership, transitional issues, and conflict management issues.

Cornerstone serves as a resource for building an environment in the Church which contributes to the well-being and effectiveness of its ordained leadership and to congregational wholeness. It seeks to establish connections with those who have mutual concerns and to enable innovative programs and partnerships to emerge. Cornerstone is committed to developing learning communities where interesting ideas are shared for the benefit of all.
