THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION IN THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH:
A RENEWED VISION

Lilly Endowment Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana, has awarded a grant of $419,565 to the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest. This grant will enable the Council of Deans, representing all Episcopal seminaries, to implement a project entitled "Theological Education in the Episcopal Church: A Renewed Vision." The purpose of this project is to call the whole church into fuller participation in the mission of providing theological education for all, by sparking a national conversation, and creating themes, resources and programs for Theological Education Sundays. This project has been created by a partnership between Episcopal seminaries, the Episcopal Church Center, and theological educators throughout the country in a wide variety of settings. The Office for Ministry Development of the Episcopal Church Center, the Episcopal seminaries, and the Trinity Grants Program, Trinity Parish, New York City have all committed significant resources to this project in addition to the Lilly Endowment.

This is a four-year project. In the first year an inclusive, widely representative planning process will lay the groundwork for production of video resources and many collateral materials. This will be followed by a three-year cycle of Theological Education Sunday visits to over 2000 parishes in the Episcopal Church which will share a vision of theological education embracing all those involved in this important mission. These visits will begin in 2003. The videos and other materials produced will help to introduce the vision and provide resources for development of theological education at the parish level. Finally, in 2005, at the end of this three-year cycle, a national conference will share learnings and plan for new collaborative efforts that arise as a result of this project.

For further information, please contact any Episcopal seminary dean or the Rev. Melford (Bud) Holland at the Office for Ministry Development of the Episcopal Church Center.
